Every now and then, a literally brilliant new popstar pops out of nowhere with ‘the goods’. Last year gave us Ariana Grande. The year before gave us Jessie Ware. We’ve already had one this year in Tinashe, but:

Right, that’s the introductions over and done with.
You don’t wear elbow and knee pads if you’re not going for world pop domination, let’s be honest.
As is the right of passage for new popstars in 2014, she did the vocals on the Chase & Status song ‘Count On Me’, which is still a banger of the highest order. Unlike the likes of Sam Smith and Foxes, her music is in the same ‘house with a pop sensibility’ avenue as the song she was featured on. In fact, her first proper single is a Chase & Status production. But we’ll get onto that momentarily.
The other right of passage for popstars in 2014 is the buzz single. Moko has this base covered too, with ‘Freeze’. It’s a bit moody, a bit atmospheric and a bit 2014. It’s a bit good too, which always helps on the path of pop supremacy.
None of this matters though if the proper first single is shit. This is what Moko is going with:
BLOODY HELL WHAT A SONG.
Yes, it’s not particularly ground-breaking in the context of the charts right now. There is something very commanding about the whole package though; as cliched and ugh as it sounds, Moko appears to have ‘it’. Someone aiming for a #57 smash isn’t going to wear her hair like that. Nor is that popstar going to be voguing around a disused warehouse. Nor would they perform the song with the same gusto as she does:

We’re yet to find a true star from the house Zeitgeist of 2014, but it could well be Moko.
